I moved back to Emmetsburg 17 years ago for one reason: I wanted my kids to experience the freedom of growing up in a small town.
About three weeks ago, the founders of JEMC (Jace, Eldon, Mason, and Cash) Golf Balls showed up in our driveway covered head to toe in sludge and mud, their golf cart loaded with equally dirty golf balls, shouting, “Look at what we found in the pond today!”
Um… you mean the pond in the middle of the golf course? In the middle of the day?
“Yeah! We got out of the way when people needed through. Jace found a snapping turtle, too.”
Over the course of a week, they recovered more than 1,000 golf balls from that pond—dodging wildlife and wayward shots and chatting with golfers along the way.
Basically, they had the most Emmetsburg summer ever.
My own summer memories are filled with afternoons at the lake, A&W chili cheese fries, watching E-Hawk softball from the outfield, and E-Hawk baseball under the lights.
And now, I get to watch my kids make memories of their own.
Seeing them experience the freedom, adventure, and fun of growing up in this little town fills my cup in ways I can’t begin to explain.
